FOUNDATION OIL PAINTING COURSE INFORMATION

The upcoming Foundation Painting Course focuses on the traditional techniques of painting objects in oil paints. The fundamental elements and principles of painting are taught in this structured course. The lessons are supplemented by slides of Art Historical Master paintings as well as contemporary art works. The course covers measurement and proportion, understanding tone, techniques of painting grounds, brushwork, oil painting mediums, colour theory, composition and creating texture through scumbling, glazing and impasto.

FOUNDATION OIL PAINTING MATERIALS

Like all art equipment the quality, and thus cost, of oil paints varies. The better quality paints will have a smoother consistency and be easier to work with. The Maimeri range is excellent and the Rembrandt, Rowney Georgian or Winsor & Newton rages are good.

  • Fan brush
  • A pad of 10 sheets of 16” x 20” (A3) primed Fredrix canvas paper.
  • 2 x A3 stretched canvas
  • 2 x A4 canvas boards
  • Gesso (acrylic primer for oil painting)
  • A palette knife
  • A palette (white melamine coated masonite from the studio or a wooden palette)
  • Genuine turpentine
  • Purified linseed oil
  • A roll of kitchen towel
  • 3 small glass containers with lids for the turpentine
